How Do I Clean My Handmade Ceramics

I make durable ceramics that are designed for everyday use. They are dishwasher safe however to maintain the brightness of the glazes washing by in warm soapy water is best.

Can I use the dishwasher?

In my house if it can't survive in the dishwasher it wasn't meant for me. I use the dishwasher for all of my handmade mugs and, although I might lose some glaze colour brightness over many many washes, I have not encountered any problems as yet.

What about thermal shock?

All ceramics (not just handmade) should not be exposed to extremes of temperature or they may crack and break. This means not taking a ceramic item out of the fridge or freezer and then placing it in the oven or adding boiling water to it (for example).

All my pottery is tested by adding boiling water to room temperature items to ensure the item is stable prior to shipping.

Can I carry my vase by its decorative handle?

If you see an item with a standard sized handle e.g. a mug, jug or vase with large handles then you can safely assume these are functional handles made to support the item.

Some of the vases that I make have handles that are intentionally very small. These were designed to add interest rather than be functional.

Are your glazes food safe?

I use food safe glazes on all items that are made for the consumption of food and drink.

The exterior of vases and other decorative items may occasionally include glazes that are not food safe.
